Is Money REALLY The Issue?

Posted on 07/19/10 Comments

Money money money, moneeeey! It’s what keeps the world moving, and is on everyone’s mind. Money is such an ingrained part of all our lives that there’s no way we can ever really get away from it. Not like it’s a bad thing though…

My thoughts about money have changed A LOT over the years. Growing up in a rather poor family (family of four with about $1200/month), it started off in a way that most could guess. Programming is everything and leads to beliefs and ways of thinking about things.

Too much money is a bad thing. Rich people are snobby. You have to be doing something illegal to have that much money. But as time goes on and you get older, you realize that it’s a bunch of bullshit. That it really is just bad programming passed on to the next, and the next generation.

Then you’ve got people who grew up poor then turn out rich and successful. What did they do to get to where they are now? They changed their beliefs, changed their attitude, and got the heck to work. There’s too much going on and too much potential out there for anyone to waste their time, whining and complaining that they’ve got nothing. It’s up to you to do something about it.

Still though, one thing that I keep noticing as my financial situation seems to be getting better (hey, I’m no hundred thousandaire, believe me) is that money isn’t really the issue. Money is good and the more of it, the better, but it doesn’t really change the makeup of who we are.

If you’re an asshole, you’ll just be a bigger asshole. If you’re a wonderful, giving person, you’ll be even more of a wonderful, giving person. You see, I’m faced with my own dilemma. 1) I could be a much better person and not be as negative sometimes, 2) I could stop worrying about and focusing some of my attention on BS and what really doesn’t matter, and 3) I could help a lot more people by getting a better attitude.

I’m not the nicest person, I’ve said it. No matter what you see online, there’s a different side to the story, same with anyone you meet. And I think that’s where we need to pay attention and recognize before it’s too late to fix it.

You can’t be perfect, but you can be better. All of us have a goal to make more money and/or a goal of how much we want to make. But we shouldn’t let our mind’s attention towards making money, get in the way of us and who we really are as a person. Money will just “enhance” so to speak, who we are already.

I want to be a nicer guy. I want to be more positive. I want to be more helpful. And with more money, I can do better things as that person. Or, I could just become an egotistical asshole with a fat wad of cash.

I choose the first one and that means I’ve got some solid work ahead of myself.

“What about you? Do you get what I’m saying or am I just ranting here?”

I totally get what you are saying. Who you are cannot be defined by things external to you. The external items can reflect aspects of yourself back to you (like how you respond to them, for instance) ~ but they do not, in and of themselves, define who you are, or even who you hope to create yourself to be. Thank you Mike ...
