The Future of Twitter

Posted on 04/10/10 Comments

While people were out having a good time last night, news came out that Twitter acquired Tweetie. Tweetie? You mean that Twitter client that’s an iPhone app and also has a desktop version for Mac? Yep, you got it.

According to Mashable, they’re changing the name to “Twitter for iPhone” and dropping the price back to free. As for the desktop version, you can probably see that changed to “Twitter for Mac” or something like that.

Now, I didn’t create this blog to yap about and gossip about things in the online world, acquisitions, and all that stuff. I created it to talk about strategies, tactics, tips, and techniques regarding business, success/personal development, and social media, three things that are really important to me.

And after hearing about this news, I can’t help but think that Twitter is getting closer and closer to unvieling their ad platform. Let’s face it: Twitter is going through a whirlwind of growth right now. Over 50 million tweets per day, over 60% of accounts outside of the US, and 75 million users as of February (although the active users are far less than that).

As much as Twitter’s investors and board of directors are patient and willing to let the site grow, they’re all there to make some money. The growth is there and people are a tweetin’ like crazy, but at the end of the day, the service can’t keep going on for free.

So far Twitter has been pointing towards more of an ad platform, although, Biz Stone said last year there will be paid accounts for business. We’ll likely see a mix of both.

The whole moral of the story is things are changing. It’s time to make some money. Twitter’s founders and team are VERY clear however about not introducing something that will be in the way and aggravate users. These guys seem to have a good head on their shoulders and only time will tell…

“What are your thoughts on Twitter introducing advertising into the mix? Do you think it will change how we tweet?”
